Book Review by Joanna Mallory

Rated 4 stars out of 5

“In Battle for the Soul of Canada Rev. Ed Hird pairs readings from 1 & 2 Timothy with historical and cultural vignettes in a series of messages challenging us with the importance of raising up the emerging generation of Christian leaders in Canada.Ed writes, “the key to renewing the soul of Canada — and the heart of this book — is to be found in raising up Timothys”. And that’s exactly what Battle for the Soul of Canada sets out to equip us to do.

Each chapter is short and informative. There’s also a companion study guide available, Seeking God’s Solution for a Spirit-Filled Canada, at spiritfilledcanada.blogspot.com ”

Book Review by author Donna Dawson

Reverend Ed Hird’s book The Battle for the Soul of Canada (ISBN 0978202201) is one of the most unusual books I have ever read. It doesn’t really have a category so I won’t confine it by trying to assign one. Written in an easy-to-read style, Reverend Hird’s book satisfies me on several spiritual levels.

There is the intellectual side of it—the history lessons. Too often we forget about the history of Christianity in Canada to our own demise. Reverend Hird has brought the history of faith in our country to the forefront of this book but he’s done so much more. He has woven solution to our present day ills into each page by reminding us of those who have blazed the spiritual trail before us.

Sometimes, as I read, I couldn’t help but wonder where he was leading. After all, what does a shuffleboard court in a Vancouver park have to do with Canadian hockey and—well—faith in Christ? Reverend Hird can tell you quite capably in this fascinating book. He continues to throw out tidbits of our nation’s past and its relevance to Christianity. I am amazed at how often we take for granted places, events and blessings that are ours only because of a past Canadian’s walk with God and I am bluntly reminded of my carelessness in The Battle for the Soul of Canada.

This book would be an interesting read if Reverend Hird stopped at simply reminding us of our faith heritage but he goes one step further and shows us examples of how we can make a difference in our nation’s spiritual health. Bravo, Reverend Hird, for opening our eyes to our own identity as a country and as believers of Christ.

Four Canadianchristianity.com articles from Battle for the Soul of Canada

(four articles from the award-winning book 'Battle for the Soul of Canada')

a) B.C.’s first war – and its Common Prayer warrior (August 2008)
digital BC Christian News

In the fourth installment of our series marking B.C.’s 150th anniversary, author and pastor Ed Hird profiles a man of war – and worship.

HOW MANY of us have ever heard how Colonel Richard Clement Moody ‘fought the good fight’ in B.C.’s first war?

In 1858, Colonel Moody’s troops steamed north along the Fraser River to Yale, on the Enterprise.

b) Mapmaker Thompson a godly man

DAVID THOMPSON, of all the Canadian explorers, was one of the most godly and counter-cultural.

He was so countercultural that, unlike many early explorers, he actually stayed married – even after he became financially successful!

The early 19th century western Canada map was essentially blank until Thompson filled it in. Thompson was one of the master-builders of Canada and possibly the greatest geographer the world has ever known.

c) ‘Father of B.C.’ Douglas was strengthened by scripture

HOW OFTEN do we give thanks for Governor James Douglas, Father of B.C.?

The province still bears the mark of his vision; but he had little to work with in terms of men, money and materials. But he had determination, and the strength he derived from being steeped in scripture.

Douglas prophetically said: “It is the bold, resolute, strong, self-reliant man who fights his own way through every obstacle, and wins the confidence and respect of his fellows. As with men, so it is with nations.”

d) Frederick Seymour: the forgotten governor of B.C.

TO have Mount Seymour Provincial Park right in my backyard is such a blessing. My wife and I, along with our three boys, have whiled away many pleasant hours hiking along the mountain’s trails. I often wondered just who it was named after.

After being given a fascinating book entitled British Columbia Place Names, I discovered Mount Seymour is named after the first governor of the united British Columbia colony, Frederick Seymour.

Even though Seymour has been described as the forgotten governor, his name is found scattered throughout the Lower Mainland.

Study visit to Crete

Dear friends in Christ,

Please keep my wife and myself in your prayers, as we travel to Crete after Easter (April 1st to 12th) where I will be working on my third book' Restoring Health in the 21st Century'. It is a sequel to 'Battle for the Soul of Canada'.

As Battle for the Soul of Canada is a devotional commentary on 1st and 2nd Timothy, 'Restoring Health in the 21st Century' will be a devotional commentary on Titus, which is all about the island of Crete. Crete was a pirate island for 800 years, so my book will have a lot to do with recovery from a unhealthy pirate lifestyle. "As one of your own prophets said, 'All Cretans are liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons. This testimony is true" Titus 1:12

I have just finished a two-and-a-half month Titus sermon series where 50 commentaries, 10 Crete books, and 20 pirate books were read.

Blessings, Ed Hird+

What a lot of Spirit-guided work to produce these questions and insights! I've never seen a study like this, quickening our national as well as spiritual consciences. This looks simple enough to not intimidate people, yet deep enough to provoke change.

Kimberley Payne says:
I have had the privilege of facilitating many Bible studies, and I believe 'Seeking God's Solution for a Spirit-Filled Canada' is a great complement to Rev. Hird's book, 'Battle for the Soul of Canada'. It is an excellent start for further discussion wrought with wonderful, thought-provoking questions.

May we raise up a country of Timothys to lead us in the coming years.
