Book Review by Laura Davis
Sunday, March 1, 2009
Dr. J.I. Packer, “a bible-believer, a converted Christian, an Anglican clergyman, a charismatic, a sufferer, a soldier of Christ, a man of God, a shepherd of souls and a nurturer of vocations, a visionary, a pioneer, a Canadian patriot, a journalist and lively author.”
Indeed, Rev. Ed Hird is all these things and more.
Battle for the Soul of Canada, in my humble opinion, should be read by every Canadian from coast to coast. This book should be part of our Public Education System’s required reading for history. I learnt so much about the history of Canada, that I was shocked I had never heard these things in school. Of course, Battle for the Soul of Canada is not just a history lesson; it’s also a book about the faith of men and women who, through the Lord’s leadership founded this great country of ours.
Based on 1 & 2 Timothy, Rev. Hird proclaims throughout the book how important it is for us as Canadian Christians to raise up Timothy’s. Who are Timothy’s? In the Reverend's words – “A genuine Timothy is someone who seeks first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness in this profoundly self-centered culture. A genuine Timothy is someone sold out for God, passionate, committed, and visionary.” Rev. Hird goes on to say, “Our vision, through the Anglican Coalition in Canada, is to raise up and send Timothy’s all across our nation, and ultimately as missionaries around the world for the healing of the nations.”
This book is a call to every Christian, no matter their church affiliation, to speak out and stand up for righteousness in the face of adversity, persecution and yes apostasy within the church. It is a wonderful commentary to have handy when studying 1 & 2 Timothy and can be a valuable tool, not just for Canadians, but for anyone who cares about their country.Tomorrow Rev. Hird will be stopping by for an interview. I hope you can join us!
